Butiama is an ideal location for visitors who are interested in learning about the historical legacy of Mwalimu Nyerere. Visitors can also take nature walks, as well as learn something about the culture of the Zanaki ethnic (Tanzania‘s smallest) group.

Mwalimu Nyerere’s Mausoleum
Mwalimu Nyerere’s mausoleum (picture to your left) is located a stone’s throw from where he was born, and within the compound of his father’s homestead. The tour of the Mwalimu J.K. Nyerere Museum also includes a visit to the mausoleum.

Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Library
Visitors to Butiama can also visit the library housing (photo to your right) the personal collection of more than 8,000 books of Mwalimu Nyerere. The collection includes books on various subjects including philosophy, agriculture, botany, politics and economics. The collection also includes manuscripts of some of the books authored by Mwalimu Nyerere including his translation of Julius Caesar and the unpublished manuscript of The Republic of Plato. A member of Mwalimu Nyerere’s family regularly provides a guided tour through the library.

Mwalimu Nyerere’s residences
Mwalimu Nyerere’s residences include his modest house built while he was president of Tanzania and where he spent his annual December holidays; a house built for him by his political party; and a house (photo to your left) built for him by the Tanzanian army after the conclusion of the Tanzanian - Ugandan war (the Kagera War) in 1979.
