African elephant
The worlds biggest mammal
living on land - the male (bull) can be as big and heavy like 6,000 kg. There
are two subspecies of African elephants; the Savannah elephant (the biggest
one of them) and the Forest elephant.
Elephants are social, sensitive and highly intelligent animals - with a brain
3 - 4 times as big as humans. They can express compassion, self-awareness
and grief.
Tanzanias elephant population has declined by alarming 60% in just five
years - figures from 2014 show. Poaching is the reason behind, but also human
expansion and needs for land are a huge problem to the most unique wildlife
on Earth.
